What do the initials “TCU” stand for, and what does the name mean?

Last Updated March 06, 2026

Texas Christian University (TCU) is affiliated with The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination. This affiliation has helped inform our values as a university since our founding in 1873. We do not require chapel attendance for students; however, we require one religious course as part of our core curriculum. Our students represent more than 60 faith traditions, and all are welcome. For students who want to engage with and grow their faith, our Office of Religious and Spiritual Life supports more than 30 religious student organizations. Learn more by reading our Horned Frog Blog.
