Mariana Salinas, a junior nursing student, shares some of her personal highlights as a student at the Harris College of Nursing and Health Sciences and how it is preparing her for her future career.

Q: Why did you choose Nursing as your major?

A: "I chose Nursing because it's a profession that provides selfless care for others. We have the opportunity to make a positive impact on someone's life during life-changing moments. Nursing is a field that is constantly evolving, and I have the opportunity to learn something new every day!"

Q: What has been your favorite class so far, and why?

A: "My favorite class so far has been my Foundations Lab, which I am currently in. In this lab, we learn about skills that we can use at the hospital! I have been approved to safely administer oral medications and injections, which I can do at the hospital during clinical! This lab makes me feel one step closer to becoming a nurse!"

Q: How do you balance academics and social life with your major?

A: "It definitely takes a lot of time management, especially as you progress into your more difficult classes. I make sure to schedule in time for self-care and to participate in campus events like the concerts and football games, and it really makes a difference!"

Q: Have you done any internships?

A: "I haven't done one yet, but I did study abroad this summer with TCU Nursing in London, and it was a great experience! We learned about the healthcare system in the UK and were able to visit both private and public hospitals in the city!"

Q: What was the process of applying for the nursing major like?

A: "TCU Nursing has a direct admit program, which means that once you apply as a first-year student and get accepted, there will be a guaranteed spot to stay on the nursing track! There are two supplemental questions for nursing majors, so don't forget to submit them! My advice is to make sure your responses are genuine and meaningful to you! Talk about things you are passionate about and follow the prompts."

Mariana's experience is one of many here at TCU that demonstrates how we are committed to building up global leaders who can lead beyond their time in college!
