Kofi AframFor students across Africa considering studying in the United States, the journey often begins with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. Questions about community, career opportunities and life far from home are all part of the process.

Kofi Afram understands that journey firsthand. Originally from Ghana, he came to Texas as an international student and has since built a career in higher education. Today, as an Admission Data Analyst at Texas Christian University (TCU), his experience offers a real-world perspective on what it means to study—and succeed—in Texas.

A Journey That Started with Opportunity

Kofi’s path to a career in data and systems didn’t begin with a set plan—it developed through opportunity and experience. While studying business administration and management at Paul Quinn College, he began working part-time in IT (information technology). That role quickly grew into a full-time position, allowing him to gain hands-on experience while completing his degree.

“Working in IT while finishing my degree wasn’t the plan, but it turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to me. I learned things in that role that no classroom could have taught me on its own.”

He later went on to earn a master's degree in business analytics from the University of North Texas, continuing to build his expertise in data and higher education systems. Before joining TCU, he held roles at organizations including the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), gaining experience across enrollment and data operations.

“Every role I took on added a new layer. UTA gave me a broader view of how data shapes decisions at the institutional level and that experience made me a stronger candidate when the opportunity at TCU came along.”

Today, his work on TCU’s Admission Systems team focuses on analyzing student data, building reports and identifying trends that help inform how the university supports prospective and current students—including those coming from around the world.

Why Texas — and Why TCU?

For Kofi, staying in Texas after graduation was a strategic decision. The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex offers access to a wide range of industries, global companies and higher education institutions, making it a strong environment for both early career development and long-term growth.

“Texas is one of those places where there’s always something happening. The job market is diverse, the economy is growing and there are opportunities across so many sectors, and as an international student, that matters. You want to be somewhere that gives you real options.”

That same environment is what continues to draw students from across the globe.

At TCU, Kofi found not only a professional fit, but a campus culture that stood out. He describes the university as welcoming and connected, with a collaborative atmosphere across teams and a campus environment that feels both approachable and engaging.

“TCU has a way of making you feel like you belong. The teams I’ve worked with collaborate genuinely, and that type of culture starts at the top. It’s not something you can manufacture.”

As a mid-sized university, TCU offers students the ability to build meaningful relationships while still accessing the resources and opportunities of a larger institution—all within a vibrant and growing region of Texas.

Staying Connected to Home

One of the biggest concerns for students considering studying abroad is what it means to leave home behind. For Kofi, Ghana remains central to who he is—especially when it comes to food, culture and community.

“Ghana is always with me. The way I approach relationships, the value I place on community, the food I cook at home; those things don’t leave you just because you’ve moved somewhere new, they travel with you.”

At the same time, his experience in Texas reflects something many international students discover: connection doesn’t disappear—it evolves.

Across the Dallas-Fort Worth area, students can find cultural communities, places of worship and international restaurants that help maintain a sense of familiarity. These spaces often become an important bridge between home and a new environment.

“There’s a Ghanaian community here. There are African restaurants, churches, events. When I first arrived, finding those spaces made a real difference. It reminded me that I didn’t have to choose between where I was from and where I was going.”

Advice for Students Across Africa

For students considering Texas as a study destination, Kofi’s experience points to a few key takeaways:

  • Community matters. The Dallas-Fort Worth area is home to a growing and diverse international population.
  • Connections create opportunities. Building relationships early—whether through classmates, mentors or professional platforms—can have a lasting impact.
  • Use the tools available to you. Platforms like LinkedIn can help students expand their network and explore career pathways.
  • Stay engaged. The more students involve themselves in campus and community life, the more they gain from the experience.

“Don’t wait to start building your network. I wish someone had told me that earlier. Reach out to professors, attend events, connect with people on LinkedIn even before you arrive. Those early relationships can open doors you didn’t even know existed.”

His experience also reinforces an important perspective: while studying abroad is a major transition, many students find ways to stay connected to home while building something new.

Why TCU?

From his current role, Kofi sees firsthand how TCU supports its students. He highlights the university’s collaborative environment, where teams work closely together and students have access to a wide range of engagement opportunities.

“I see the work that goes into supporting every student who comes through TCU’s doors, and that includes international students. The data we analyze, the reports we build — it’s all in service of making the experience better for the people here.”

That sense of connection—paired with academic support and career-focused resources—shapes the student experience in meaningful ways.

Start Your Journey

Choosing to study abroad is a big decision—but it’s also the start of something bigger.

At TCU, international students join a global community in the heart of Texas, with access to academic support, professional opportunities and a campus environment designed to help them thrive.

Kofi’s journey reflects what’s possible when students take that step.

“If I could go back and talk to myself before I left Ghana, I’d say: trust the process. It won’t always be easy, but every challenge is building something in you. Texas gave me opportunities I couldn’t have imagined, and TCU has been a big part of that story.”
