TCU Club Sports and Intramurals: How to Keep Playing in College
You spent high school in the gym, the pool or on the field, with early practices and rivalry games filling your calendar.
But what happens when you graduate from high school and aren't planning to compete at the NCAA level?
At TCU, the final whistle doesn't have to mean the end of your athletic journey.
Through intramural and club sports, you can continue playing the game you love, discover new interests and build connections that last long after the final whistle. Whether you're a lifelong athlete or just looking for a way to meet new people, there's a place for you on a team.
Why Join Intramural or Club Sports at TCU: Find Your People
Starting college means navigating a new environment, building friendships and figuring out where you belong. Sometimes, finding your community can be as simple as showing up for a game.
For speech-language pathology student Riann Alderson '28, joining an intramural flag football team became an opportunity to do just that.
“When I first arrived at TCU, I was looking for various ways to get involved around campus, and a few of my new sorority sisters decided to join TCU's flag football team,” Alderson explains. “I had never played flag football before, but have played other sports my whole life and thought it would be a fun way to stay active and meet people in a new environment.”
What started as an opportunity to try something new quickly became a way to build friendships outside her usual circle.
“My favorite part of the experience has been meeting people in such a fun and different way,” Alderson says. “I’ve become friends with all the girls on my team, as well as friends with girls on opposing teams after playing them numerous times.”
Intramural and club sports give you a shared interest to connect over, creating opportunities to meet people outside your residence hall, classrooms and major.
And you don't have to arrive at TCU with a team already in mind. If you're interested in intramurals, you can register individually as a free agent through IMLeagues, allowing teams looking for additional players to find you.
TCU Intramural Sports: All the Fun, Without the Varsity Commitment

Miss Friday night games, friendly rivalries or the excitement of competing alongside your teammates?
TCU's intramural sports program brings those experiences into college life through recreational and competitive leagues and tournaments designed for a variety of skill levels.
TCU offers 15 active intramural sports for the 2026-27 season, including flag football, basketball, dodgeball, kickball, indoor volleyball and Mario Kart. Offerings change by semester, so check the current Intramural Sports Calendar to see what’s available.
Whether you're interested in playing with friends from your residence hall or joining a team with people you've never met, intramurals offer opportunities to compete without the commitment of a varsity athletic schedule.
And some of those games can become the stories you tell for years.
For Alderson, one of those moments came during her sophomore year, when her flag football team reached the championship game.
“My favorite moment was playing in the championship game my sophomore year,” Alderson reminisces. “We had the opportunity to play in the Sam Baugh Indoor Practice Facility, and it was such a fun experience.”
Her team went on to win the championship in a close game, a win she still talks about.
“We won the championship after a very close game,” Alderson recalls. “We had such a blast at that game!”
The experience is also about having something to look forward to during the week, stepping away from the demands of classes and sharing a little friendly competition with fellow Horned Frogs.
And playing isn't the only way to get in on the action. TCU Campus Rec also hires intramural officials, and no previous officiating experience is required.
TCU Club Sports: Compete at a Higher Level

For students looking for more structured competition, TCU's sport clubs offer another way to keep competing and developing their skills.
Unlike intramurals, which primarily organize competition within the TCU community, sport clubs are student-led organizations that focus on developing athletic skills and competing at a higher level.
TCU has 22 active club sports for the 2026-27 season, including baseball, ice hockey, lacrosse, rowing, rugby, soccer and wrestling, among others.
Most clubs participate in organized local or regional leagues against other colleges and universities, giving you opportunities to represent TCU on the road.
Don’t just take our word for it. Hear from TCU club athletes in ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, rowing and rugby about what it’s like to compete for TCU, find their team and make club sports their own.
For a glimpse at where those opportunities can lead, look no further than TCU Rugby.
In summer 2026, TCU Rugby players Panagiotis Gkatzolis '28 and Jake Seley '29 earned spots on the Lone Star Rattlesnakes, a Texas Rugby Union All-Star team that traveled to Argentina to compete against some of the country's top rugby clubs.
Their experience took them from competing at TCU to representing their program internationally, showing how club sports can open doors to opportunities somewhere big.

But club sports aren't just about competition.
Student members create, administer and govern their organizations, gaining experience in leadership, teamwork and organization along the way.
From coordinating practices to managing club activities, you can take ownership of your athletic experience while connecting with teammates who share your passion for the sport.
And if the sport you're looking for isn't currently offered, TCU provides a process to request approval for a new club when there's sufficient interest.

For Alderson, the advice to incoming students is simple.
“Absolutely consider looking into intramural or club sports! They truly are an amazing and fun way to meet new people, while also staying active and having the opportunity to continue playing your sport at the college level.”
There's also no need to have your entire college experience figured out before you arrive. The opportunities exist if you're eager to compete, hoping to stay active or simply looking for something new to try.
Sometimes, all it takes is signing up for a team.
At TCU, you don't have to be a varsity athlete to keep competing, keep improving and experience the friendships that come with being part of something bigger than yourself.
