First-generation (first-gen) college students are paving the way for future generations to have access to better education and career opportunities. At TCU, we are proud to support these students as they begin their college journey and invest in their future.
If you’re a prospective or admitted first-gen student, we want to encourage you with a few pieces of advice from some of our first-gen Horned Frogs:
Research Financial Aid Options
“I wish I would have known where to apply for scholarships and how the student loan application process works.”
Billy B. ’25, Fort Worth, Texas; Journalism
Navigating the financial logistics of college can be tricky, especially when you don’t know where to look for guidance. One of the hurdles first-gen students tend to come across is finding resources to assist them in the financial aid application process.
TCU’s Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid makes it easy to locate information about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and other financial aid applications.
Fun fact: TCU automatically considers each applicant for merit-based scholarships when you apply!
Check out our guide to financial aid applications for more information or to get started with your financial application.
Use Your Resources
At TCU, we are committed to providing all our students with the resources they need
to succeed! And there are several that have played a crucial role and made all the
difference for our first-gen students, including the TRIO program and the Leadership & Student Involvement office.
“The TRIO program and the Leadership & Student Involvement (LSI) office are my most helpful resources at TCU. TRIO has been an absolute game-changer, providing me with academic support, mentorship and a community of other first-generation students who truly understand this journey. It has helped me confidently navigate college life and given me access to opportunities I would not have known otherwise. The LSI office has also been incredible in helping me grow as a leader. My involvement in different organizations, Greek life and leadership programs gave me the tools to step outside my comfort zone and develop skills that will stick with me long after college.”

Make Connections & Seek Support
Your college years are a special time when you will make life-long friends and connections. TCU’s First-Generation Network is a support community that connects first-gen Horned Frogs with one another and provides workshops that equip students with professional and leadership skills.
“The most rewarding part of my college experience would be the connections – friendships and community – that I have gotten to build over the past two years. I truly believe I wouldn’t be able to fully function and find a balance if I didn’t have a circle of people whom I find comfort in and keep me grounded.”
